Help Feed Naomi and Friends
Naomi is one of 40 Thoroughbred horses left to starve when their owner ran out of money and disappeared.
One colt was too sick to survive and had to be humanely euthanized, but not before the bank that now owned the farm got what they could for him at auction. $25. He was one 9 that Horseplay Sanctuary was able to rescue. We named him Little Man, and when our vet said there was no way to save him, we did the only kind thing that could be done.
A filly, Kate, had been so badly starved she'd metabolized her muscles just trying to stay alive. When she lay down to rest, she was too weak to stand up. During her first few weeks at Horseplay Sanctuary, we helped her to her feet several times a day until she finally grew strong enough to get up on her own. THAT was a day for celebration!
Naomi was crawling with lice, and a fungal infection had caused most of her hair to fall out. Her body condition score was 1. Near death. Naomi's registered name is Bold Mist. She is a granddaughter of the great Bold Ruler. She was a successful stakes winner at the track and produced several foals, but none of that seemed to matter now. She was just another asset, quickly turning into a liability, to people who saw only numbers on a balance sheet instead of living, breathing horses with the capacity to feel fear and pain.
She's part of our herd of 20 rescues now, putting on weight and starting to look like a real horse again. Kate's growing tall and likes to run and buck and enjoy the green grass and sunshine, her skinny body filling out. Both are a long way from being ready for new homes, but they are on their way to good health.
Horseplay Sanctuary is a registered charity with two main goals:
1) To rescue horses from neglect, abuse, or slaughter.
2) To provide therapeutic riding programs to those in need. Our human clients are kids and adults with physical or cognitive disabilities like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, or Down Syndrome. Others are women escaping from abusive relationships, or teens at risk of dropping out of school or substance abuse. All can benefit from spending time with horses; and they can help the horses get better, too.
We call it People Helping Horses Helping People.
And we need YOUR help.
Hay is our single biggest expense each year. It will take over 3500 bales of hay to feed our rescue horses this year. That's $15,000 at current prices. On top of the cost of grain, farrier services, vet bills, insurance, electricity...
Please help us buy the hay to feed Naomi and her friends. Our charity is run by volunteers. 100% of your donation will go to the horses. They deserve a life free from pain, neglect and abuse. You can help provide it.
Thank you.
